Samsung unveiled an ultra-sharp OLEDoS panel with 5000 ppi density

At SID 2025, Samsung Display showed off its latest OLEDoS panel for XR devices. The screen’s specs are staggering: brightness up to 15,000 nits, 120Hz and a pixel density of 5,000 ppi – more than any smartphone or TV.

The new panel is a 1.4-inch OLED-on-Silicon display designed for augmented, virtual, and mixed reality headsets. The company notes that the image clarity is superior to even 8K TVs. The panel also covers 99% of the DCI-P3 color space, which is the level of professional displays.

Samsung Display is actively developing OLEDoS technologies, which are OLED displays in which organic materials are deposited directly onto a silicon substrate. This approach makes it possible to make pixels microscopic, and thus achieve incredible image density with minimal screen size. This is especially important for XR headsets, where space is limited and picture quality is critical.

Besides the main new product, the company also showed an RGB version of the OLEDoS panel with a 4200 ppi density and a record-breaking brightness of 20,000 nits. For comparison, the previous model from Samsung reached a maximum of 5,000 nits, and at CES 2025 a prototype with 10,000 nits was shown. The new display is the brightest the company has ever developed in this class.
- with white light source and RGB filters,
- or with separate RGB subpixels without filters – this configuration provides maximum brightness and color accuracy.
Although the new panels aren’t designed for Samsung’s upcoming XR headset, they set the vector for the entire market. Earlier in 2023, the company acquired US-based eMagin, one of the leaders in Micro OLED and OLEDoS. This strengthened Samsung’s position in the display segment for future XR devices.
