Researchers at Cornell University have unveiled an innovative “smart” T-shirt called SeamFit that can replace a personal trainer, providing posture monitoring with a high accuracy rate of up to 93.4%. The distinctive feature of this development is the rejection of standard electronic sensors widely used in such devices.

In place of chips and biosensors, specialized threads are embedded in the seams of the T-shirt that react to the user’s movements. When a person moves, these threads undergo deformation, which the system records. The data is transmitted wirelessly via Bluetooth to a computer, where a neural network analyzes it to determine the type of exercise being performed and count the number of repetitions.

In tests with 15 volunteers, SeamFit demonstrated 89% accuracy in recognizing different types of activity and virtually error-free rep counting. Another advantage of the design is its practicality. The compact detachable module containing electronic components can be easily detached, and the conductive threads retain their properties even after numerous washings. Although their sensitivity may decrease over time, the artificial intelligence algorithms are able to adapt to these changes.

SeamFit has a wide range of applications beyond fitness. The technology can be used in rehabilitation processes, for training robots, and even in human-machine interaction systems. According to the creators, this is an important step towards the future, where “smart” clothes will become a common element of the closet. Information about the T-shirt’s launch date and price has not been disclosed yet.
