OpenAI is preparing to launch the Sora app for Android

OpenAI officially unveiled the Sora 2 video generator — an improved version of its first-generation model, and launched a standalone Sora app in late September. However, it was initially only available to iPhone users.
It’s only been about two weeks, and the company apparently has no intention of delaying the Android version. The Sora app has reportedly appeared on Google Play, but is not yet available for download.
For now, OpenAI has opened pre-registration for Android users in the U.S. and Canada via the Play Store. Similarly, the iPhone version of Sora is also only available in those two countries. Users in other regions may see the app page, but with the message «This app is not available in your country».
According to the screenshots, the Android version of Sora’s interface is exactly the same as the one on the App Store.
The Sora app —s not just a tool for generating videos from text queries. As the company notes, it offers «a personalized Sora» feed with short AI clips reminiscent of TikTok.
One of the key features has been the ability to create «cameo»-like clips where users can use their own or someone else’s face in the generated videos. This requires a short one-time recording of video and audio to confirm identity and capture appearance. In your privacy settings, you can choose who is authorized to use your image in such videos.
Although OpenAI is just getting ready to release Sora on Android, it’s fair to say the company is a little late: Android users already have access to Google Veo — a powerful video generation model whose latest version (Veo 3) has also learned how to create sound, a major step forward for Google.
