Apple scrapped a stripped-down version of Vision Pro to develop AI glasses

Apple is halting production of the simplified Vision Pro and devoting resources to developing AI-powered smart glasses to compete with Meta* and other tech companies.
Apple has decided to delay work on the N100 headset, a lighter, more affordable version of the Vision Pro that was scheduled to launch in 2027. Instead, the company is focusing its efforts on two AI-powered augmented reality glasses projects. Bloomberg reports that new priorities have already been outlined to internal teams.
The first device, known as the N50, won’t have its own display and will only be able to work alongside an iPhone. Apple expects to show a prototype in 2025, with a release slated for 2027. The second model, originally planned for 2028 and featuring a built-in screen, has now been given an accelerated development timeline.

Meta*, which launched the Ray-Ban Stories line back in 2021, solidified its position in the segment with the updated Ray-Ban Meta* glasses in 2023. The latest display-less version received a larger battery, improved cameras, and sportier frame models, allowing the company to maintain its lead.
Google is also developing AI glasses based on Android XR and the Gemini assistant. They are expected to be released between 2025 and 2026 in partnership with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. In addition, OpenAI is working with former Apple chief designer Jony Ive on its own AI-powered device.
Apple’s pivot reflects a general trend in the industry: leading players are shifting their focus to wearable devices with generative AI, always-on connectivity, and user-friendly interfaces. The Vision Pro remains the flagship of the mixed reality segment, but its high price and limited portability are holding back sales.
The bet is on AI glasses as a lighter and more scalable product for the mass market. However, competing with Meta*, which has already seized the initiative, remains a serious challenge.
