Russia and China will build a lunar power plant by 2036

A memorandum has been signed on the creation of a key element of a future lunar base – an international power plant on the Moon.

Russia and China have formally agreed to work together on the construction of a lunar power station, which will be part of the ambitious International Scientific Lunar Station (ISLS) project. The memorandum was signed in Moscow during talks between Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping and was part of a package of agreements to expand the two countries’ strategic partnership, including cooperation in space exploration.

What is a lunar power plant

It is an energy supply system designed to support a permanent human presence on the Moon. The power plant will supply energy to the scientific base where basic research is planned, from analyzing the soil to studying the space environment.

Preliminary plans call for the station to be launched in 2036. The project has already been supported by 13 countries and is seen as a platform for international scientific cooperation on the Moon.

Technology Challenge and Co-Development

Building a lunar power plant is a major technological challenge. It is necessary to develop:

  • Reliable power generation systems (possibly solar or nuclear),
  • Solutions for its storage in conditions of sharp temperature fluctuations,
  • Solutions for its storage in conditions of sharp temperature fluctuations
  • Modules for autonomous operation in the absence of permanent staff.

Roscosmos and the China National Space Administration (CNSA) will coordinate research, jointly develop technologies and attract new participants to the international project.

The Moon – a new arena for international cooperation

The lunar power plant will be the anchor point for the future infrastructure of the ISLV, a scientific base where partner nations can conduct long-term missions. It’s also an important step in the global trend of lunar exploration: competition between spacefaring nations is intensifying, and alliances like this allow them to join forces and share technology.
