“Ice” volcanoes have been discovered on Mars

Researchers at the University of Bern used the CaSSIS camera aboard the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter spacecraft to create high-quality color images. They show huge deposits of frost on several volcanoes on Mars.

The ExoMars program, organized by the European Space Agency (ESA), was first launched in the 1970s. Through this program, active research on life on Mars is being conducted. It uses the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) spacecraft with the CaSSIS camera system to create color and stereo images of the surface.

The ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) spacecraft is used for this purpose.

Scientists were able to detect frost on the tops of the Tharsis volcanoes using a spacecraft. These peaks are the highest points not only on Mars, but in the entire solar system.

The appearance of hoarfrost is attributed to the transport of water vapor to the tops of volcanoes by the wind. Rising air currents carry moist air from the lowlands, and condensation occurs as it reaches the summits. This effect was unexpected because the mountainous region is at low latitudes, close to the equator of Mars.

The researchers analyzed more than 5,000 images taken by the CaSSIS camera to identify the hoarfrost. The volume of hoarfrost detected is equivalent to 150,000 tons of water that circulates between the surface and the atmosphere every day during the cold season. The discovery will help in planning future missions to Mars.
