X temporarily disables the encrypted message function

X users can no longer send encrypted private messages. The company said it is «suspending» the feature to make improvements. Previously, the ability to encrypt messages was only available for correspondence between verified users who were mutual subscribers or had previously accepted messages from each other.

Encrypted messages are no longer available in X

According to the X update, users can still view previously sent encrypted messages, but new ones cannot be sent. The encrypted messaging feature has been marked as «early access» in the platform’s help center.

An update to the X update indicates that encrypted messages are no longer available.

The feature previously had a number of limitations: it didn’t support group chats, media files, or encrypted metadata.

Possible link to the XChat project

X did not specify when the feature would return, or whether its shutdown is related to Project XChat, the company’s new messenger, which is rumored to get support for encrypted messaging and additional security features, including PIN-based chats.

Officers at X have repeatedly hinted at the development of XChat, but there is no official information about the project. Users recently experienced service disruptions after a major outage, believed to have been caused by a fire at one of the company’s data centers in Oregon. Some issues with the platform remain unresolved, according to X’s developer page.
