Google has begun rolling out a personalization feature for group chats in the Messages app for Android, allowing users to set their own icons.
Previously, up to four round avatars of participants were displayed as the group chat icon, which isn’t always convenient – especially if the same contacts are participating in different chats. The group name was the only reliable way to distinguish chats from each other.
Some users now have the ability to upload their own group icon. To do this, you need to open the group chat you want to use and click the top bar to go to the group details page. If the feature is already active, a pencil icon appears to the right of the current image.
According to one of the first reviews, you can’t set a GIF file as an icon, and once you replace an image, you can’t revert to the previous default look.
The feature isn’t available to everyone yet – even on devices with the Messages beta installed, it may not be available. But when it’s available to the public, it’s sure to make using group chats more convenient.
