WhatsApp is testing message limits to combat spam

WhatsApp is testing a new limit on the number of messages users can send without receiving a reply from the recipient. As part of the experiment, the company is exploring different limits to determine the optimal level at which spammers and high-volume users will be restricted first. This limit includes all messages from individuals and business accounts, even if multiple messages are sent to the same recipient that go unread. However, if the recipient replies, such correspondences are excluded from the count. Accounts approaching the limit will be shown warnings.

The company says most regular users are unlikely to reach the limit. It’s generally considered good practice not to send messages to people who don’t respond anyway. That’s why this test is primarily aimed at business accounts and those who send mailings and spam. The experiment is scheduled to be launched in several countries in the coming weeks.

This is yet another Meta* measure to combat spam and fraud on the platform. Last year, WhatsApp introduced the ability to opt out of marketing messages, and in August 2025, it began notifying users if someone from outside their contacts adds them to groups. The company has also blocked more than 6.8 million fraud-related accounts in the first half of 2025.

* Owned by Meta, it is recognized as an extremist organization in Russia and its activities are banned.
