The iPhone 18 Pro could get an adjustable aperture camera
Apple, according to insiders, is preparing a variable aperture camera for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max – a first for the lineup. The innovation should improve picture quality and give users more manual control over the image.
The information was published by Chinese insider Digital Chat Station, known for accurate predictions on Apple and other brands’ devices. He claims the data came from the company’s supply chain.
What’s known about the possible update
According to a source, the main 48-megapixel Fusion camera in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models could get a variable aperture. This would allow you to physically change the size of the lens opening – widening it for low-light photography or narrowing it for greater depth of field.
In addition, both pro models, according to Digital Chat Station, will feature lenses with wider aperture values – in both the main and telephoto cameras.
What’s different about variable aperture
In the current models – the iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro, and 17 Pro – the main camera has a fixed aperture of f/1.78. The lens is always in the same position, and the user can’t change the depth of field manually.
If the rumor is confirmed, the iPhone 18 Pro will allow you to adjust the aperture, much like DSLRs. This will allow you to fine-tune focus and create a natural background blur.
And if the rumor is confirmed, the iPhone 18 Pro will be able to adjust the aperture like a DSLR.
Sources and predictions
Similar data was previously cited by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who claimed that it was the iPhone 18 Pro models that would be the first to get the technology. Samsung is also rumored to be considering similar developments for the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
Variable iris was also previously mentioned in iPhone 17 Pro rumors, but it didn’t appear in the production version.
The iPhone 18 lineup is expected to officially premiere next September. Digital Chat Station previously accurately predicted the iPhone 15’s sensor specs and the iPhone 12’s panel design, which adds credibility to the current information.
