The iPhone 16e proved to be technologically more interesting than the iPhone 16

Despite analysts’ skepticism, the iPhone 16e has not only caught the attention of buyers, but it’s also proving to be a less simplistic version of the iPhone 16. According to a new report from Counterpoint Research, the smartphone stands out for its unique approach to hardware – and gives Apple an unexpected advantage.

The iPhone 16e model is built on the same A18 chip as the standard iPhone 16, supports Apple’s Intelligence platform, and features a 6.1-inch display. But it has a less flashy design, with a bangs cutout instead of Dynamic Island, a single camera on the back, no MagSafe wireless charging, and no separate camera button. But the best part is inside.

For the first time in Apple history, nearly half of the components are made in-house

Counterpoint analysts have found that about 40% of all components in the iPhone 16e were designed and manufactured by Apple itself. That’s a record high among all of the company’s smartphones. By comparison, the iPhone 16 has 29%, and the iPhone SE 3 has 31%.

The new iPhone 16e is the first Apple smartphone with its own modem – the C1. This modem, while technically inferior to the iPhone 16e’s Qualcomm Snapdragon X71 modem, still delivered the best download and upload speeds  in real-world scenarios. It’s also more energy efficient, and its compact size made room for a larger battery.

In addition to the modem, the device also has proprietary power management and signal processing chips inside – all of which are part of Apple’s development portfolio, giving the company more control over the user experience.

Why the iPhone 16e could be a hit

The cheaper components achieved by eliminating third-party suppliers have allowed Apple to set the iPhone 16e’s starting price at $599, $200 lower than the iPhone 16. Against the backdrop of rising smartphone prices in the $800 and up segment, this looks like a particular win.

But in terms of key features – processor, AI support, and screen – the iPhone 16e offers virtually the same level of performance as the older models.

Sales are already showing impact

According to Counterpoint, strong demand for the iPhone 16e has helped Apple outpace competitors in smartphone sales in the first quarter of 2025. Apparently, the reliance on partially “homegrown” hardware and price cuts has paid off.

Apple’s bet on partially “homegrown” hardware and price cuts have paid off.

Although the iPhone 16 looks more powerful on paper, iPhone 16e offers a more thoughtful and balanced approach that users – especially those looking for a reliable iPhone without overpaying for flagship features – have come to appreciate.
