IFA 2024: TCL unveiled the Nxtpaper phone with a button for maximum monochrome

TCL has launched two new mid-range Nxtpaper phones with matte displays designed to protect your eyesight. The TCL 50 Pro Nxtpaper 5G and 50 Nxtpaper 5G follow a pair of budget models released earlier this year with one major update: a button that puts the display into — quote — “Max Ink mode”. They’ll be available in Europe first, and then we can expect the smartphones to roll out to other countries around the world.

The Nxtpaper button — is a two-stage slider that puts the display into an easy-to-read monochrome mode that mimics e-ink. Turning on Max Ink Mode also turns off notifications and displays app icons in a wireframe style as if you were using an E-Ink display, which is pretty adorable. This mode also extends battery life, and TCL claims you can read on it for up to seven days — almost as if you were carrying around a regular phone that can be turned into a reader with a single click.

Beyond Max Ink Mode, both phones offer a large 6.8-inch screen with 1080p resolution and refresh rates up to 120Hz. They both feature a 108-megapixel main rear camera and a generous 5,010mAh battery. The Pro model features an upgraded 32-megapixel selfie camera and 512GB of storage, while the non-Pro version — 8-megapixel selfie camera and 256GB of storage. The 50 Pro is also offered with a couple of additional accessories: a flip case and a stylus. Other than those few differences, the two devices look pretty much the same.
