Huawei Pura 80 Ultra entered the global market with a unique telephoto lens

Huawei has officially unveiled the flagship Pura 80 Ultra smartphone outside of China. The main feature of the device is the world’s first switchable dual focal length telephoto lens, a step forward in mobile photography that sets it apart from the competition.

Motorized Switchable Dual Telephoto Lens

The core of the Pura 80 Ultra’s photographic capabilities is its unique motorized switching telephoto lens. It utilizes a 50MP 1/1.28″ sensor and provides 3.7× (83mm) and 9.4× (212mm) optical zoom. By comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra implements 10x periscopic zoom, but with a much smaller sensor – just 1/3.52″.

The camera also includes a 50MP main module with a 1″ (RYYB, f/1.6-f/4.0) sensor, a 40MP ultra-wide-angle lens (f/2.2) and a 1.5MP spectral sensor that enhances color reproduction.

Premium design and screen up to 3000 nits

The smartphone gets an aluminum frame and second-generation Kunlun tempered glass on the front and back. The front panel is occupied by a 6.8-inch LTPO OLED display with a resolution of 2848×1276 pixels and an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz. Brightness reaches an impressive 3000 nits, making the screen readable even in bright sunlight.

Characteristics and Differences of the Global Edition

According to insiders, the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra is built on the Kirin 9020 chipset, comes equipped with 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of internal storage. The smartphone runs on the EMUI 15 shell (based on Android), and a 5,170mAh battery (5,700mAh in China) with support for 100W fast charging and 80W wireless is responsible for the battery life.

And it’s not just the battery, it’s also the battery that can be used for charging.

There’s an important limitation, though: the global version lacks support for 5G and satellite connectivity — those features remain exclusive to the Chinese variant with HarmonyOS 5.1.

Start of sales and price

Huawei Pura 80 Ultra will be available in black and gold colors. In China, the price starts at ¥9,999 (roughly $1400). Global pricing and release dates have yet to be announced, but official statements from the company are expected soon.
