Google Pixel 9 unveiled: same size, more AI, more power and a new camera

Google released the Pixel 9 smartphone series soy ahead of schedule, as the company’s launches are usually in October. All the better for us. Let’s take a closer look at the specs of the base Google Pixel 9.
Google has released its Pixel 9 series ahead of schedule.
The smartphone features a 6.3-inch OLED display, a 120Hz FHD+ panel. Google has ditched the optical fingerprint scanner and switched to a more robust ultrasonic one. Peak brightness is noticeably higher at 2,700 nits (instead of 2,000 nits).

The slight bulge on the screen diagonal makes the phone slightly larger than last year’s model, though it’s still among the smaller Android phones. Compared to the new Pixel 9 Pro, it’s exactly the same size (152.8 x 72.0 x 8.5mm and 198g). And if you want bigger, you should check out the Pixel 9 Pro XL (well, or the Pixel 9 Pro Fold). Here’s a size comparison:

Google Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro differ in that the latter has a Periscope. The base model sticks to the classic dual-camera configuration (wide + ultra-wide). The main camera is the same as last year, a 50-megapixel module based on Samsung’s GNK 1/1.31″ sensor (1.2µm pixels) and an OIS-enabled lens. The front camera with a hole for selfies is almost the same as before, with a 10.5 MP Samsung sensor, but now with an autofocus lens.

The ultra-wide-angle module gets a notable upgrade with a 48-megapixel sensor (1/2.55-inch, 123° lens) over the 8 Series’ 12-megapixel (1/2.8-inch) module. Inside, the notable upgrade is processing power. The Tensor G4 features one main Cortex-X4 core, as well as three A720 cores and four A520 cores. Crucially, it features a more efficient Exynos 5400 modem. The Mali-G715 GPU doesn’t seem to have changed, except for a slight increase in clock speed.

A 4700 mAh battery, which supports 45W fast charging, is responsible for the device’s battery life. On top of that, the smartphone gets 12GB of RAM, IP68 dust and water resistance, and years of software updates.

The phone is available in four colors at launch: Porcelain, Peony, Wintergreen, and Obsidian. Pricing will be announced at a later date.
