Apple continues to work on its first foldable smartphone. The US company was recently granted a new patent titled “Electronic Devices with Ruggedized Foldable Displays,” which reveals possible features of the upcoming device.

According to this document, flexible AMOLED panels are not yet strong enough for everyday use. Insiders also claim that early internal tests Apple conducted with Samsung’s display failed, causing the company to have to suspend development of the smartphone.

In the new patent, the company proposes an alternative solution in the form of a screen with a composite structure: a layer of glass with a flexible matrix. Such a display would be able to bend without creasing, and the increased thickness around the edges of the panel would make it impact-resistant.

The smartphone is credited with an 8-inch internal screen and a 6-inch external screen. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple plans to release foldable MacBooks with LG Display matrices in 2026, priced at around $650 (R$57 260). However, it’s unclear whether a flexible-screen iPhone will be introduced alongside them.
