WhatsApp users in Russia reported massive outages in Russia

Problems with sending messages on WhatsApp were fixed on November 27. According to Kommersant and the portal “Failure.RF,” users reported that the messenger did not work over either Wi-Fi or mobile internet, regardless of the service provider.

The “Failure.RF” service logged more than 1,000 complaints during the day. About 29 percent of the complaints came from St. Petersburg. Residents of Moscow, the Novosibirsk and Sverdlovsk regions, and Tatarstan also reported malfunctions. Users said they were unable to log into their accounts, use the web version and send media files: “For the fourth day, videos just won’t go out. Not at all.”

Scale and recurrence of outages

The portal also recorded problems with WhatsApp access on Nov. 25 and 26. Over three thousand complaints came in over the two days. The complaints related to both the mobile app and the PC version.

Context

State Duma deputy Anton Nemkin said earlier that blocking WhatsApp in Russia is a matter of time. According to him, the messenger is operating in the country without complying with local laws and poses a threat to users’ safety.
