Gmail begins rolling out Gemini-enabled smart replies

Google has begun rolling out the Contextual Smart Replies feature in Gmail for Android and iOS, announced at I/O 2024. Unlike the conventional Smart Replies introduced in 2017, the new version offers more granular responses through the use of Gemini’s AI model. It analyzes the context of an email and offers personalized responses that are tailored to the specific conversation.

Users now see three smart reply options arranged in a carousel. The first option offered displays the overall meaning of the reply, and all options vary in tone and content. Holding your finger on an answer provides a quick preview of its text. A single click adds the selected answer to the body of the email, including the salutation and conclusion, allowing the user to easily make edits before sending.

Language support and accessibility

At launch, Contextual Smart Replies are only available in English. To use them, you must be a subscriber to one of the following paid plans:

  • Google One AI Premium
  • Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, Education Premium

The feature has already started rolling out and will be available to all users in the coming weeks.

Additional Gmail features with Gemini support

Contextual Smart Replies complements other Gemini-based features, such as “Summarize,” which now works with individual emails, not just conversations. Gmail Q&A for mobile, which was previously only available on desktop, is also available.
