Xiaomi is preparing to launch its own XRING 01 chip

Xiaomi has officially confirmed that it will unveil its first standalone processor, the XRING 01, in May, an important step in the company’s development and an attempt to reduce its reliance on overseas suppliers such as Qualcomm and MediaTek.

An important step in the company’s development and an attempt to reduce its dependence on overseas suppliers such as Qualcomm and MediaTek.

The company started developing its own system-on-a-chip as early as last year. Now Xiaomi co-founder Lei Jun has confirmed in a post on Weibo that the XRING 01 does indeed exist and will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

The XRING 01 is a system-on-a-chip that will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

The chip was first spotted in March in prototype form, and its development is being handled by a special division within Xiaomi. The 1,000-person team is led by Qin Muyun, a former top Qualcomm executive who joined Xiaomi in 2021.

Like Huawei, the company is looking to secure itself from possible US sanctions and restrictions. Building its own chip is a strategic move that differentiates Xiaomi from other Chinese brands like Oppo and vivo that still rely on third-party solutions.

Interestingly, the XRING 01 isn’t Xiaomi’s first experience in this area. The company already released the Surge S1 processor in 2017, but it was underpowered and not widely used. XRING 01, in contrast, should offer performance on par with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or even Gen 2.

The chip is rumored to be manufactured at TSMC’s facilities using a 4nm process and uses standard ARM architecture. The configuration of cores looks like this: one performance core up to 3.2GHz, three performance cores at 2.5GHz, and four energy efficient cores up to 2GHz.

Which smartphone will the XRING 01 appear in? According to preliminary reports, it will be the Xiaomi 15s, an improved version of the already released Xiaomi 15 and 15 Ultra. The novelty is likely to retain most of the hardware specs, but will get a new processor of its own production.

This decision could be an important step in Xiaomi’s strategy to control its own hardware – and a serious bid for independence from global chipmakers.
