Snapdragon 8s Elite may get a new name before launching

Qualcomm is gearing up to release a new chipset for flagship smartphones, but it looks like its name may change ahead of its official announcement. It was previously speculated that the processor would be called Snapdragon 8s Elite, but now there are reports that it could come out as Snapdragon 8s Gen 4.

Characteristics and Features
According to the leak, Qualcomm is developing a chip with model number SM8735, which is likely to be the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4. The new processor will be built on TSMC’s 4nm process and will get the following set of cores: one powerful Cortex-X4 clocked at 3.21GHz, three performance Cortex-A720s clocked at 3.01GHz, two Cortex-A720s clocked at 2.8GHz, and two more Cortex-A720s clocked at 2.02GHz.

The Adreno 825 GPU will be a simplified version of the Adreno 830 used in the Snapdragon 8 Elite. This could mean a slight drop in graphics performance, but still maintaining high power efficiency.

Reasons for the name change
According to insiders, the reason for possibly dropping the «Elite» name was the SM8735’s lack of Qualcomm’s proprietary Oryon architecture. It was for this reason that the company could choose the «Gen 4» designation, which could confuse users. Previously, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 was expected to be the standard flagship chip, but now the lineup is becoming even more difficult to understand.

Release Prospects
Smartphones based on the new processor should be available as early as early April, which means Qualcomm should officially unveil the new chip soon. It’s still unclear which brands will be the first to get Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, but it’s likely to be devices from Chinese manufacturers.
In general, Qualcomm continues to complicate its chip naming system, which could create confusion for buyers. We’ll have to wait for the official announcement to see if the move is justified.
