Rumors have surfaced that Apple is working on new 90Hz refresh rate display technology for the iPad Air, 24-inch iMac, and Studio Display. The source of the information was an anonymous insider who contacted Upgrade podcast hosts Mike Hurley and Jason Snell.

Display Upgrade: 60Hz to 90Hz

The iPad Air, 24-inch iMac, and Studio Display currently feature 60Hz refresh rate screens. New rumors suggest that 90Hz panels will first appear in the next-generation iPad Air with the M3 chip, and then be introduced in the iMac and Studio Display.

An anonymous source said: “I have information about display improvements for the next generation iPad Air with the M3. Apple is developing a high refresh rate LCD screen with a new Liquid Motion panel at around 90Hz. They also plan to extend this technology to other models such as the 24-inch iMac and the next generation Studio Display.”

Perspectives on display upgrades

Previously, analyst Ross Young reported that the entire iPhone 17 lineup will get 120Hz ProMotion displays. However, this is the first time reports have surfaced that Apple may be developing 90Hz screens for other devices.

So far, this is the first time we’ve seen reports of Apple possibly developing 90Hz screens for other devices.

According to Bloomberg, the next-generation iPad Air could debut in early 2025. There’s no specific information yet on when the updated Studio Display will be released. The recently refreshed 24-inch iMac probably won’t get a new update until late 2025 at the earliest.
