Seagate has announced the launch of its new hard drive — Exos Mozaic 3+, which features a high capacity of 30TB.
This 3.5-inch drive offers 10 “pancakes” with a capacity of 3TB each and a spin speed of 7200 RPM. The drive is driven by a proprietary 12nm controller. The manufacturer has no plans to increase the number of platters to avoid increasing noise, weight and cost, as well as to maintain the reliability of the drive. Instead, Seagate intends to continue utilizing hybrid HAMR and shingle-mode write (SMR) technology to further increase HDD capacity.
The price of the hard drive has not yet been announced, but the new product is expected to cost around $450 (39 900 rubles) against the current average cost of a terabyte ($15 — 1 300 rubles). The previous record holder in the hard disk drive market was Western Digital’s 24TB Gold model. While Toshiba plans to release a 50TB drive, they do not yet have a solution with more than 22TB of capacity in their portfolio.

The closest thing to Seagate’s Exos Mozaic 3+ among enterprise models is Western Digital’s 26TB Ultrastar DC HC670. Moreover, Seagate has already announced the imminent release of its 32TB and 36TB Exos hard drives, but the company has yet to provide an estimated timeframe for their introduction to the market.
