Samsung is releasing a collection of microSD cards in honor of Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most famous video game characters in history. Today, Samsung made a surprise announcement dedicated to this iconic character. The company announced a new series of microSD cards inspired by the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.

New microSD card series

Samsung Electronics America has partnered with SEGA to develop the Sonic the Hedgehog PRO Plus series of microSD cards. These cards will be available in four different variants, each associated with a unique character from the Sonic universe. Here’s what the different versions of the cards look like:

  • 128GB – with the red Knuckles icon.
  • 256GB – with a yellow Thales icon.
  • 512GB – with a blue Sonic icon.
  • 1TB – with a black Shadow icon.

Card Specifications

The cards feature A2 specifications and offer sequential read speeds of up to 180MB/s and write speeds of up to 130MB/s. This makes them a great choice for a variety of applications, including gaming consoles, and their performance has been tested on the Nintendo Switch.

High durability and resistance

In addition to their excellent performance, the cards are also highly durable. They are protected against water (they can survive up to 72 hours in salt water up to 1 meter deep), high temperatures, magnetic fields and X-rays. They are also drop resistant and can survive a fall from a height of more than 4.8 meters.

Prices and release date

The Sonic the Hedgehog PRO Plus series will be available for purchase from January 2025 on Samsung’s official website and selected retailers. Pricing will be as follows:

  • 128GB – $23.99.
  • 256GB – $36.99.
  • 512GB – $68.99.
  • 1TB – $125.99.

If you want to purchase one of these themed microSD cards, you can get a 30% discount when you sign up on Samsung’s website. You’ll also be told when the cards will be available. It’s unclear if these cards will be sold outside the US.
