Computex 2025: MediaTek confirms development of 2nm chip

MediaTek has officially confirmed the development of a new mobile processor based on 2nm process technology. This was announced during an appearance at Computex 2025. This makes MediaTek one of the first players to step into the next major technology leap after 3nm.

MediaTek is now one of the first players to take a step towards the next major technology leap after 3nm.

First in the race for 2nm?”

The industry is already using 3nm chips, but manufacturers and consumers are increasingly looking toward 2nm, the next frontier in energy efficiency and performance. Apple is usually the early adopter of the new nodes, using TSMC’s advanced process technology. However, it’s unclear whether the iPhone will move to 2nm as early as the next generation – there’s a chance Apple will stick with the improved 3nm N3P node for the A20 chip due to logistics and cost.

If that happens, MediaTek could be the first to bring a full-fledged 2nm mobile SoC to market.

Tape-out as early as September – mass production in 2026

MediaTek says the final tape-out of the new chip will take place in September 2025. That means the final design will be completed by then, ready to be handed off to production. The timing coincides with TSMC’s plans: mass production using the N2 process should start in the second half of 2026.

The name of the chip has not been disclosed, but it is rumored to be the flagship Dimensity 9600. There’s no information on its specifications yet – due to the early stage of the project and the long time until launch.

MediaTek gears up for the “ultra-premium”

The company has traditionally been seen as a maker of more affordable alternatives to Qualcomm. But with the move to 2nm, that could change. Manufacturing on TSMC’s 2nm process will be expensive, with wafer costs already projected to rise 10% over 3nm. This could make the Dimensity 9600 the most expensive chip in MediaTek’s history.

The New Head of Android Flagships

If all goes according to plan, the first smartphones based on MediaTek’s 2nm SoC could arrive by the end of 2026. That would mark a major milestone in mobile technology and a major statement by the company in the premium Android device segment.
