Blender benchmark shows off the graphics power of the Apple M4 Max chip

Last week, Apple unveiled the new MacBook Pro with the M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max chips. Initial processor tests on the Geekbench platform showed promising results for the flagship M4 Max chip. Now, thanks to GPU tests in Blender Open Data, it’s clear that the M4 Max’s graphics capabilities are impressive, too.

And now it’s clear that the M4 Max’s graphics capabilities are also impressive.

M4 Max test results in Blender

Blender Open Data is a platform that allows users to measure the performance of their devices under real-world conditions when running Blender. Unlike synthetic benchmarks like Geekbench, this benchmark demonstrates real-world performance with specific tasks.

The M4 Max chip scored an average of 5208 points across 28 tests. That puts it just below the laptop version of Nvidia’s RTX 4080, but above the previous-generation desktop RTX 3080 Ti and the current desktop RTX 4070. Considering that Apple’s graphics are integrated into the chip and take up significantly less space, these results are impressive.

Compared to top Nvidia solutions

The M4 Max has its limitations, however. Compared to Nvidia’s top-of-the-line RTX 4090 mobile graphics card, the results look more modest. The RTX 4090 Laptop scores an average of 6863 points, which is about 30% higher than the M4 Max.

At the same time, Apple boasts high power efficiency: the M4 Max chip consumes significantly less power than competitors on Windows devices. That makes it a great choice for mobile work. But for users focused solely on maximizing performance, the M4 Max isn’t the leader just yet.

The M4 Max is not yet the leader.

Potential for future Apple devices

It’s interesting to note that the desktop RTX 4090 scores 10880 points on average. If Apple releases an M4 Ultra chip that doubles the performance of the M4 Max, it could surpass that score. That would make future devices like the next-generation Mac Studio even more attractive to professionals.
