AMD delays Ryzen 9000 desktop processors “out of an abundance of caution”

Amdm had planned to unveil its new Ryzen 5 processors on July 31, including the 16-core, 32-thread Ryzen 9 9950X, which the company calls “the world’s most powerful desktop processor.” Instead, the company is announcing a one- to two-week delay “out of precaution.” The Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X will go on sale Aug. 8, while the Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 9900X will go on sale Aug. 15.

This isn’t because AMD has discovered any issues with the actual chips, spokeswoman Stacy McDiarmid tells The Verge. Rather, AMD has found that some of its chips haven’t passed all the proper testing procedures, and the company wants to make sure they do.

There is a full statement from AMD’s Senior Vice President of Computing and Graphics Jack Heinch:
We appreciate the hype surrounding the Ryzen 9000 series processors. During final inspections, we found that the initial production units that were shipped to our channel partners did not fully meet our quality expectations. Out of caution and to ensure the highest quality of service to each Ryzen user, we are working with our channel partners to replace the original production units with new ones. As a result, there will be a slight delay in retail availability. Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X processors will go on sale August 8th, and Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 9900X processors will go on sale August 15th. We are proud to deliver a high quality experience to every Ryzen user and look forward to providing our fans with a great experience with the new Ryzen 9000 series.
AMD has already recalled chips that needed additional testing before going on sale, and the testing seems to be going smoothly; AMD engineers are confident that there will be no further delays in releasing the chips, MacDiarmid reports.
