Ubisoft has opened a new game studio backed by Tencent

Ubisoft has officially launched subsidiary Vantage Studios — the first of the so-called «creative houses» as part of a previously announced reorganization. The new team will oversee the company’s major series: Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry and Rainbow Six.

The studio is backed by an investment from Tencent, which in March announced a €1.16 billion ($1.36 billion) investment that gave the Chinese giant a minority stake in Vantage. In July, Christophe Derenne and Charly Guimault were appointed co-CEOs of the division.
Ubisoft emphasizes that the goal of the changes — to give developers more autonomy and simplify the path from player feedback to its implementation in games. According to Guimault, this will allow for faster decision-making and flexibility to change course when necessary.

Vantage Studios will be located in Ubisoft’s offices in Montreal, Quebec City, Sherbrooke, Saguenay, Barcelona and Sofia. The name for the division was chosen by a vote of the company’s 2,300 employees. Tencent, on the other hand, will act more in an advisory role — final decisions will rest with the co-CEOs.
For now, Vantage remains the only «creative house» but Ubisoft plans to create new studios with shared «DNA and expertise». Exactly what the future units will do —is not yet known.
It’s an important move for Ubisoft: in recent years, the company has faced disappointing releases, studio closures and layoffs. Against that backdrop, the success of Assassin’s Creed: Shadows and the launch of Vantage Studios could be the start of a new chapter.
