Pokémon creators create post-apocalyptic action game

Game Freak, the studio known for the Pokémon franchise, unveiled a new original project at the Xbox Games Showcase. Beast of Reincarnation is an action-adventure game set in a post-apocalyptic Japan in the year 4026. The game will be released on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2026, and will be available from day one with a Game Pass subscription.

New world, new heroine
The protagonist of Beast of Reincarnation is Emma, nicknamed Sealing. Together with her dog Ku, she is trying to stop the spread of a spoilage that threatens to wipe out humanity. According to the trailer, players will see elements of melee combat using a blade and exploring the world using lianas and other acrobatic techniques.
The project is being directed by Kota Furushima, who has not previously appeared in the credits of Game Freak’s big titles. The game retains the studio’s recognizable art style, but offers a dark atmosphere and fast-paced gameplay that sets it apart from the usual Pokémon-inspired projects.
From “Project Bloom” to Beast of Reincarnation
Beast of Reincarnation was previously known under the codename Project Bloom. The game was originally going to be released under Take-Two’s Private Division label, but after the publisher closed down, the project got a new partner, Fictions.

Fictions executive producer Mika Kurasawa commented on the partnership with Game Freak:
“It’s incredible to work with game director Furushima-san and the renowned Game Freak team. We really appreciate this partnership and can’t wait to show players the stunning world and intense battles of Beast of Reincarnation.”
The project promises to be an important step for Game Freak beyond the Pokemon franchise, both stylistically and genre-wise.
