Atari revives a legend: new Intellivision Spirit console for $150

Atari has officially unveiled the Intellivision Spirit — a modern version of the legendary Intellivision game console first released in 1980. In doing so, the device has received a host of modern technologies. The controllers are now wireless and the connection to the TV is via HDMI. The console also features 45 pre-installed games, making it similar to retro solutions such as the NES Classic and Atari 2600+.
The Spirit library includes sports and strategy titles — these were the genres that were once Intellivision’s strong suit. Games include the classic puzzle game Boulder Dash and the space shooter Space Armada, inspired by the legendary Space Invaders. Each game is accompanied by a customized gamepad overlay that shows the control scheme.

Interestingly, Intellivision was once Atari’s main competitor, similar to the later rivalry between Nintendo and Sega. Last year, however, Atari acquired Intellivision, finally ending their long-running rivalry.

Intellivision Spirit is priced at $150. Pre-orders are already open, and the first shipments will begin on December 5.
