Sony unveiled the RX1R III compact full-frame camera with a 61 MP sensor

Sony has announced the RX1R III, the third generation in its popular RX1R series of compact full-frame cameras. Featuring a 61-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor, the latest BIONZ XR image processor and a ZEISS Sonnar T* 35mm F2 fixed lens, the camera is aimed at street, travel and even professional shooters, delivering high image quality in a compact size.
The anti-reflective coated sensor with no optical low-pass filter delivers sharp, detailed images with wide dynamic range and low noise. The lens is the same as in previous RX1 models, but now with even higher sensor alignment accuracy for optimal optics.

An AI module is responsible for autofocus, which recognizes eyes, faces, heads and bodies – even when no face is visible. The 693 phase autofocus points cover 78% of the sensor area, working in both stills and video.
The key new feature is Step Crop Shooting, which allows you to “switch” between equivalent focal lengths of 35mm, 50mm and 70mm, both during shooting and in post-processing (RAW). The lens also supports macro shooting with a minimum distance of 20cm and up to 0.26x magnification.
The RX1R III comes preloaded with 12 Creative Look color profiles, including two new ones:
- FL2 – a warm and nostalgic look with soft tones;
- FL3 – bright and saturated colors;
The body is made of magnesium alloy, with a new rubberized grip and controls aligned on the top panel. There’s an OLED viewfinder with 2.36 million dots and 0.70x magnification. The camera is powered by an NP-FW50 battery that provides up to 300 shots on a single charge. There’s also USB-C for fast charging and connecting to external power sources.
The camera has a USB-C port for fast charging and connecting to external power sources.

Sony emphasizes the eco-friendly nature of the RX1R III’s manufacturing – the camera is assembled in a factory powered by 100 percent renewable energy and comes in eco-friendly packaging. Accessibility features include voice-activated interface elements and image zoom.
The release date is July 2025, with a guide price of €4,900 or £4,200. Additional accessories will be available in September:
- thumb rest TG-2 – 280 euros;
- leather case LCS-RXL – 180 euros;
