Pebble returns: two new smart watch models unveiled

Eric Migicovsky, founder of the Pebble brand, recently announced two new smartwatch models that could appeal to older fans of the brand. The Core 2 Duo and Core Time 2 are updated versions of the iconic models, retaining the key features that have made Pebble so popular. These include an always-on e-ink screen, long battery life, physical buttons and simplicity of design.
Returning to its roots
The move was made possible after Google opened up the source code for PebbleOS, allowing Migicovsky to continue working on a watch for the platform he created himself. Six weeks after announcing his plans, he’s already ready to offer two finished devices for pre-order. In a statement, he said that “no one has yet created the perfect smart watch for people like us, so I’ll make one just the way we want it.”
Core 2 Duo: an updated classic
Core 2 Duo is virtually identical to the legendary Pebble 2, but has been updated with “modern chips and new features”. The watch features a 1.26-inch screen based on black-and-white electronic ink, a built-in microphone, a lightweight polycarbonate case and an impressive battery life of up to 30 days. They track sleep and steps, and include a barometer and compass.
Pre-orders for the Core 2 Duo are now open, and shipments will begin in July. The price is $149, and the watch will be available in black and white colors.
Additional pricing is $149, and the watch will be available in black and white.

Core Time 2: a dream of a watch
Core Time 2 is the follow-up to the Pebble Time and the conceptual Pebble Time 2, which was never released. It features a 1.5-inch e-ink screen with 64 colors, a metal body and buttons, and flat glass for better visibility. The battery keeps the device running for 30 days.
In addition, the Core Time 2 includes a touchscreen, heart-rate monitor, microphone, and speaker. The watch has IPX8 water protection and support for thousands of existing apps for PebbleOS. Pre-orders are open, but shipments won’t start until December. The device is priced at $225.

Open Source Software and Customization
Since PebbleOS is open source, both devices can be easily modified and custom firmware installed on them. This opens up new possibilities for creating unique features and apps, which adds another plus for enthusiasts.
