Nintendo confirms plans to announce a new console by the end of March 2025

Nintendo has confirmed that it plans to announce its next console before the end of its current fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2025. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa made the announcement in an online conference on Tuesday following the release of the company’s earnings report. However, he did not disclose additional details.

The company first announced plans to release a Nintendo Switch successor in May, when Furukawa said: “We will announce a successor to the Nintendo Switch during this fiscal year.”

In its latest financial report for the three months ended Sept. 30, Nintendo revised its Switch sales projections for the current year, lowering it to 12.5 million units from the original 13.5 million. The company also cut its operating profit forecast by 10 percent, to 360 billion yen ($2.4 billion).

“For a platform that is now in its eighth year on the market, demand for hardware and software remains stable and sales remain robust,” Furukawa said after the results were released. “However, actual sales were below our initial expectations, and given their level in the first half of the year, we have adjusted our sales forecasts, resulting in a revised earnings outlook.”

In the wake of the news, Nintendo shares fell nearly 4%, with Toyo Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda suggesting that the pressure on the company’s stock could continue as it is unlikely that a new console will be announced before the end of the calendar year.

“It has become much harder to make an announcement this year… In the midst of the New Year’s Eve season, it would be unwise to divert attention to a new console,” Yasuda said.

According to the report, developers have been advised not to expect the launch of Nintendo’s new console until April 2025.

“None of the developers I’ve spoken to are expecting a launch this fiscal year,” noted GI.biz reporter Chris Dring. “In fact, they’ve been told not to expect it in the [current] fiscal year. Many of the people I’ve spoken to are hoping for a launch in April or May next year.”

Switch, launched in March 2017, has been on the market for eight years. In July, it surpassed the Famicom for the longest time on the market without a successor, becoming Nintendo’s longest-lived console.
