Microsoft will release four Xbox exclusives for PlayStation and Nintendo Switch

Games chief Phil Spencer wants sales to drive future hardware innovation. That’s why Microsoft will release four Xbox-exclusive games for Switch, Nintendo Co. and Sony Group Corp.’s PlayStation. Sharing games with Nintendo and Sony means more copies of the games will be sold. The exclusives could incentivize purchases of Xbox hardware.

Microsoft must also tread carefully when making games exclusive, as this was a major stumbling block in the antitrust scrutiny of Activision’s purchase of Blizzard. At this point, the company has no intention of making the Starfield role-playing game and the new Indiana Jones game from Microsoft’s Bethesda Studios available on other consoles. Without exclusive games, there’s probably no point in buying an Xbox.

“If you’re a PlayStation customer, you shouldn’t think there’s some plan that says this is going to be the beginning of all the games that are going to come out on PlayStation or Nintendo,” Spencer said. “We don’t have that plan today.”
