Meta* reassures everyone that the Quest Pro lineup is not shut down

Meta* isn’t giving up on building a potential Apple Vision Pro competitor, and its CTO warns that reports of the Quest Pro 2 shutting down are greatly exaggerated. In a July 19 post about the development of displays for Meta’s upcoming headset, Meta revealed that the company had stopped acquiring new components for the Quest Pro. The report also claimed that production of the Pro line of headsets had been suspended, effectively nullifying the prospect of a Quest Pro 2.

In a response posted to Stories and spotted by Road to VR, Meta* CTO Andrew Bosworth argues that there’s a lot more to the story. Bosworth also suggests that claims that Quest Pro 2 was discontinued may have come from an employee affected after the project was downsized.

«I have to explain this every year. The Quest Pro 2 headset doesn’t exist until we decide it does. I mean, there are multiple prototype headsets, all being developed in parallel. We say that’s not what it is and we stop development. In some cases, we say this is what’s needed and spin them out», — Bosworth explains.

And then we say this is what’s needed and spin them out.

He goes on to say that no headset gets a name until it goes on sale, and then evasive about its existence.

«There may or may not be a Quest Pro 2. I’m not going to say, but I will say that you shouldn’t believe everything you read. Very often it comes from people who are unhappy that their particular project was cut, while there are other projects that were not cut».

They’re not.

The July 19 announcement stated that Meta*’s expectations for a new high-end headset include an AR headset codenamed Orion, codenamed Orion, intended for internal use only and set for release in 2024. The public AR headset, to be released in 2027, codenamed «Artemis», will apparently have reduced components, such as using glass instead of silicon.

Meta* said the headset will also include a new AR headset, codenamed Orion, for internal use only, to be released in 2027.

This will apparently reduce the headset’s field of view to 50 degrees for the glass version, rather than 70 degrees for the silicon carbide-based models. Meanwhile, the Quest Pro’s main competitor — Apple Vision Pro — has a 120 degree field of view.
