V Purse — is a new concept phone from Honor that asks the question «What if foldable phones were more like fashion accessories? ». The company showed off the device during a presentation at IFA 2023 alongside the Honor Magic V2, its latest foldable phone announced in China earlier this year.

The V Purse — is a demonstration of the capabilities of foldable devices, and Honor has not said whether it will be released as a product. Rather, the company said it plans to release the Magic V2 globally no later than the first quarter of next year, CNBC reported, but has yet to officially announce pricing outside of China.

The Magic V2 will be available globally no later than the first quarter of next year.

There are two key elements to the V Purse’s design. First is a series of interchangeable straps and chains that attach to the foldable design and allow it to be worn as a wallet or purse. Secondly, an outward-facing display shows a series of wallpapers that mimic different styles of handbags. It’s essentially the opposite approach to what Louis Vuitton has done in 2019.

At the same time, it’s the opposite of what Louis Vuitton has done in 2019.

I think the idea of attachable straps isn’t so bad. Accessory makers like Bandolier have proven that many people are interested in attaching them to their phones as a convenient way to carry — without having to buy a whole new phone.

Positioning the V Purse’s foldable display on the unprotected exterior rather than inside the device — a bold choice. Obviously, having the screen always visible is the whole point of the device; Honor wants to use it to showcase its developments in always-on display. The company said it has collaborated with a number of fashion designers and artists to suggest different themes for the device, and said that in the future it wants to open up the API so that anyone can create their own. These designs can respond to both touch and movement of the phone.

So the company said it is looking to open up an API so that everyone can create their own.

The V Purse has a small button on the body to detach and unfold the display, and Honor says the device is less than 9mm thick when folded.

The outward-facing display has obvious drawbacks in terms of durability, however. Foldable phone screens are soft and fragile, so they’re usually safely hidden inside the devices. Former parent company Honor — Huawei — placed screens on the outside in the first models of its foldable phones, but pretty soon started placing them inside like everyone else. The risk of scratching or damaging the fragile display is very high, even if Honor claims the V Purse hinge can withstand the same 400,000 bends as the Magic V2.

Honor claims the V Purse hinge can withstand the same 400,000 bends as the Magic V2.

These concerns are academic, however, until Honor says it actually intends to sell the V Purse. Given our experience with previous similar concept devices, it’s going to be a very long wait.

We’ll have to wait a long time.
