Garmin unveils smartwatch for sailors with satellite connectivity and LTE

Garmin has expanded its lineup of premium marine wearable devices with the introduction of the quatix 8 Pro smartwatch. The flagship model is aimed at people who spend a lot of time on the water and need reliable connectivity and specialized features.

In terms of design, the quatix 8 Pro continues the ideas of its predecessor in many ways. The watch features a 47mm titanium bezel, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and a 1.4-inch AMOLED display with increased brightness. The screen is readable in direct sunlight and is designed to withstand harsh marine conditions, including saltwater, splashing and prolonged sailing.

The key difference between the quatix 8 Pro and conventional smartwatches — connectivity capabilities. Garmin is focusing on one of the major problems of sea travel — loss of signal far from shore. The watch incorporates inReach satellite technology and an LTE module to stay connected up to 50 miles (about 80 kilometers) from shore. Users can send text messages, make voice calls and get up-to-the-minute weather forecasts without the need for a smartphone.

The quatix 8 Pro also features an SOS emergency call function. In case of danger, a distress signal can be sent directly from the watch &#8212 it will go to Garmin’s 24/7 emergency response center. According to the company, the center has already helped organize more than 1,200 successful water rescues.

From a software standpoint, Garmin introduced a new Boat Mode. The watch’s interface automatically adjusts to your current environment. On the water, the home screen displays marine tools such as autopilot control, trolling motor status and vessel data. Once back on land — at work or at the gym — the interface switches to everyday apps and health metrics.
