Anker recalls several models of powerbanks due to fire risk

Anker has announced a global recall of a number of external battery models sold in various countries. The reason was potential safety issues related to the batteries overheating. This is the second recall of the brand’s products in a month, MacRumors reports.

Recall: Which models have been hit by the program

Earlier in June, Anker began a recall of the PowerCore 10000 (A1263) model sold in the U.S. from June 1, 2016 to December 31, 2022. At that time, it was found that the lithium-ion battery inside the device could overheat, causing the battery to melt, emit smoke and, in some cases, ignite.

The manufacturer has now expanded the recall internationally. The following models are included in the program:

  • Anker Power Bank (10,000 mAh, 22.5 watts), model A1257
  • Anker Power Bank (20,000 mAh, 22.5W, built-in USB-C cable), model A1647
  • Anker MagGo Power Bank (10,000 mAh, 7.5W), model A1652
  • Anker Zolo Power Bank (20,000 mAh, 30W, built-in USB-C and Lightning cables), model A1681
  • Anker Zolo Power Bank (20,000 mAh, 30W, built-in USB-C cable), model A1689

Reasons for the recall and actions for consumers

Anker explained that new quality control protocols were implemented at the beginning of the year to identify the defect. All affected models are equipped with batteries from the same supplier. These cells are at risk of overheating, which can lead to fire.

Although the likelihood of an incident is considered low, the company has decided to initiate a precautionary recall. Owners of the listed models are advised to discontinue use immediately.

Check if your device is subject to the recall by entering the battery serial number on the official program page. Proof of purchase will be required to participate in the program. If eligible, users will be offered a choice of either a replacement device or a gift card for a purchase at an Anker store.
