Amazon has unveiled its first Kindle Colorsoft color e-book

Amazon today refreshed its popular Kindle line of reading devices, introducing the first Kindle with a color display. The new Kindle Colorsoft, priced at $280, features a 7-inch, high-contrast screen that the company claims delivers «color like paper». Unlike traditional tablets with LCD displays that support color, Colorsoft uses E Ink -a technology similar to other Kindle devices but with new solutions that allow color reproduction. Amazon uses LED pixels and a new oxide substrate to deliver color without loss of resolution or page-flipping lags.

Color E Ink technology is new for Amazon

Amazon has been working on a color E Ink display for a long time, and today the company finally unveiled the result. The new technology has made it possible to achieve a color display while retaining all the advantages of black-and-white E Ink screens: low power consumption and a sharp image that doesn’t strain the eyes even when reading for long periods of time. The Colorsoft display uses an oxide substrate and LEDs to deliver color images without loss of sharpness or increased response time when turning pages.

New Apple development rumors and competition in the E Ink market

It’s worth noting that rumors of similar technology developments have been swirling around Apple as well. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported back in 2022 that Apple was testing colored electronic paper displays for its future devices, including possible foldable tablets and iPhones. Color E Ink could be the screen solution for such devices, and perhaps someday Apple will join the race to create a usable and energy-efficient color display.

Today, color E Ink is still considered a new technology, but some devices like the Remarkable Paper Pro are already using it. However, Amazon claims that Colorsoft is the brightest Kindle to date, and its display automatically adjusts the backlighting to suit any lighting conditions. The screen resolution is 300 ppi for black-and-white images and 150 ppi for color, making text crisp and readable.

Availability and launch of new Kindle models

The new Kindle Colorsoft will go on sale October 30 and is already available for pre-order. The Kindle Scribe will be available starting December 4 and is also available for pre-order. The rest of the updated Kindle models, including the Paperwhite and the base version in Matcha color, are available now.
