The White House has set up a TikTok account.

The White House has joined TikTok, the social network that President Trump tried to ban during his first term. The first video features footage of Trump at various events to a Kendrick Lamar track. As The New York Times notes, the post references the platform’s popular video montage from the movie “Creed” with Michael B. Jordan. In the video, Trump says, “I am your voice,” and the caption reads, “America, we are RETURNED! Hello, TikTok?”
The Trump administration believes TikTok helped him win the support of young voters in the 2024 presidential election. At that time, his campaign account garnered more than 15 million followers. “President Trump’s message dominated TikTok during the campaign, and we’re excited to build on that success and connect with citizens in a way no administration has been able to before,” said White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt.

The president’s relationship with TikTok has been far from always so friendly. He previously promised to ban the app in the U.S. and signed an executive order banning any transactions between TikTok and its Chinese parent company ByteDance for national security reasons. The document said that “TikTok’s data collection threatens to give the Chinese Communist Party access to Americans’ personal and sensitive information, allowing it to track federal agency employees and contractors, collect blackmail dossiers, and engage in industrial espionage.”

On taking office earlier this year, however, Trump suspended the law that was supposed to block TikTok in the US. He delayed the ban several times to give ByteDance more time to sell the US business. Trump has previously claimed that a “very wealthy” group of investors is ready to buy TikTok, but the administration has yet to disclose their names.
