Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Oil” topped the poll, with David Lynch’s “Mulholland Drive” coming in second and Hayao Miyazaki’s animated “Ghostbusters” rounding out the top 3. The top 10 also includes “Dogville,” “No Place for Old Men,” “Avatar,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotlight,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Inception” and “Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood.

Klim Shipenko, director, screenwriter: “For me, ‘Oil’ is Paul Thomas Anderson’s most significant, epic and monumental movie. It is my favorite director alive and certainly one of the most important directors of the 21st century. Few films can be compared to “Citizen Kane,” but “Oil” is definitely in that range in terms of power of statement. Take for example the theme of godhood! It’s stunningly done across all movie departments. And, of course, the acting is beyond brilliant – not just Daniel Day-Lewis, but the rest of the cast.”

Alexei Balabanov’s “Cargo 200” was ranked 17th among Russian projects. In total, seven Russian films made it into the top 100: in addition to “Cargo 200,” the rating includes “Leviathan” (55th place), “Night Watch” (77th place), “Arithmia” (80th place), “Shapito Show” (82nd place), “Return” (85th place), and “Elena” (98th place).

If the rankings were based on the number of mentions rather than a point system, Hayao Miyazaki’s anime “Gone with the Ghosts” would top the list. The films “City of God,” “Kingdom of the Full Moon” and “Portrait of a Girl on Fire” were also mentioned more often than others, but fell 2-3 points short of making the top 100.

More than any other film.

Pavel Voronkov, film critic: “Miyazaki, who, along with del Toro, is a member of the club of modern storytellers, has turned an ancient Japanese tale about babai-kidnappers (as well as “Alice in Wonderland”) into a poignant story about what capitalism is doing to us. Or rather, what we are doing to ourselves by professing capitalism. Also, Ghost Gone, like the rest of Miyazaki, is one of the lamest ways to get into anime (even the American movie academics have managed it). Once you’ve been whisked away by the ghosts of the place, you won’t want to go home.”
