first MacBook Pro with Samsung OLED display may arrive this year

Rumors have been swirling for quite some time that Apple is gearing up to launch a MacBook Pro with an OLED display. Multiple reports have also pointed to Samsung Display as the supplier for these OLED panels.

According to a new report, Apple is indeed planning to unveil a redesigned MacBook Pro sometime this year, featuring several significant updates.

The next-gen MacBook Pro is expected to be powered by the Apple M6 chip and equipped with an OLED panel manufactured by Samsung Display. However, there’s some conflicting information regarding touchscreen support: some sources claim the display will have touch capabilities, while others suggest this feature will be limited to models equipped with the M6 Pro and M6 Max chips.

South Korean media outlets report that Samsung Display will kick off mass production of eighth-generation OLED panels as early as May this year. This would mark the first commercial-scale rollout of OLED panels at this generation globally.

Samsung is reportedly making these panels in two sizes-14 and 16 inches-matching the screen sizes expected for the upcoming MacBook Pro models. The company aims to supply up to 2 million OLED panels for these laptops by the end of 2024.

Samsung Display looks set to be the exclusive OLED supplier for Apple’s first OLED MacBook Pro. Chinese manufacturer BOE is also trying to break into Apple’s supply chain, but it remains uncertain if they can meet Apple’s rigorous standards. Given the scale of the anticipated changes, this update could become one of the most significant overhauls in the MacBook Pro lineup in recent years.
