Sony says cloud gaming won’t be a core part of its business until 2025

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) doesn’t expect cloud gaming to become a core part of its business until 2025 at the earliest. That’s according to CEO Jim Ryan, who was speaking as part of Microsoft’s ongoing court battle with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission trying to block the $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard by the Xbox maker.

In April, the U.K. Competition and Markets Authority said it was obstructing the deal because of concerns that it would «change the future of the fast-growing cloud gaming market, leading to less innovation and fewer choices for British gamers in the coming years». Microsoft has since signed several distribution agreements with cloud game vendors to allay regulators’ fears about the proposed acquisition.

In pre-recorded video testimony that was shown in court Tuesday, Ryan of Sony PlayStation was asked when cloud technology would become commercially successful or a significant part of the company’s business.
Sony announced this month that it is testing cloud-based streaming for PS5 games. The feature will be offered to PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers.Obviously, it depends on how you define significance, but I will say that cloud technology will become a significant component of how gamers access games between 2025 and 2035.
