Oppo and Volkswagen enter into a patent agreement on 5G for cars

Oppo and Volkswagen have announced a partnership agreement that will give the German automaker access to the Chinese company’s standard-essential patents (SEPs), including developments in 5G connectivity.
Modern cars are becoming increasingly “smart” and depend on stable cellular connectivity for various digital functions to work properly. The agreement with Oppo will enable Volkswagen to improve connectivity in its vehicles.
Oppo is the world’s eighth largest 5G patent holder with 62,000 patents active in 40 countries and regions. This is Oppo’s first bilateral license agreement with an automaker.
The deal underscores Volkswagen’s desire to strengthen the software component of its vehicles, especially amid market share loss and technology lag in China.
