Testing of a fully unmanned streetcar began in Moscow

Moscow City Hall announced that the first unmanned streetcars started running in the capital from May 23. Information on all stages of the introduction of this autonomous mode of transportation was also provided.
The practical implementation of unmanned streetcars began in 2023 and is divided into three stages. In the last phase, the streetcars will become fully autonomous, while in the first two phases the trip will still be controlled by a human being.
All the streetcars will be fully autonomous.
The first stage started on May 23, when tests began on a streetcar without passengers but with a driver in the cab and a system that can correct errors. The degree of automation is up to 90%, but the final decisions are made by a human.
In the second phase, the system will take over the control and decision-making functions, and the driver will insure the car’s actions. The first tests with passengers will also begin on route 10 from Kulakova Street to Shchukinskaya metro station. At the third stage, it is planned to provide a fully unmanned streetcar with passengers and without a driver.
