Porsche continues to develop internal combustion engine models in response to slowing electric car sales

Porsche isn’t ready to completely ditch gasoline engines in favor of charging ports just yet. The company, according to Automotive News Europe, plans to release more models with internal combustion engines in response to the slowdown in electric car sales. Porsche’s chief financial officer, Lutz Meschke, told the publication: «We will continue to stick to the use of internal combustion engines for much longer. »

We will continue to be committed to the use of internal combustion engines.

Response to changes in the premium segment

As Car and Driver notes, Meschke also emphasized that there is a “clear trend” in the premium segment toward gasoline engines, and therefore Porsche will “respond” to these changes in its product cycle.

Porsche currently sells two high-end electric cars, the Taycan and the recently released Macan. The company had previously planned to launch more purely electric models, including the Cayenne 718 and a new high-performance SUV. Now, however, Meschke said Porsche could release hybrid or even all-gasoline versions of those models, and the company is currently making conceptual decisions on that.

The company’s electrification plan

Porsche had previously set a goal that 80 percent of its sales would be electric vehicles by 2030. This year, however, the company has faced challenges in the U.S. market, where electric car sales have plummeted, and in China, where local brands are producing cheaper electric cars. Porsche has responded to those challenges by releasing restyled versions of the rear-wheel-drive Macan and Taycan in an attempt to stabilize sales in the face of competition and shifting customer preferences.
