Excess air can get under the hood and stress the latch mechanism.

Lamborghini is recalling the Urus SUV because the hood can open or detach from the vehicle. The recall, which includes Urus Performante and Urus S models from model years 2023 through 2024, affects 2,133 vehicles, but the automaker believes only two percent have the defect.

The recall affects only two percent.

The problem involves the hood latch striker rivets. Lamborghini found that the rivet studs that attach the latch to the car may be underdeformed due to an inadequate manufacturing process at one of its suppliers.

At speeds above 94 mph, this problem can cause small gaps between the hood and front bumper. The increased airflow can put excessive stress on the latch mechanism, causing it to break. The hood may swing back, blocking the driver’s view and damaging the windshield. The hood can also become completely detached from the vehicle, creating a hazard to other drivers on the road.

Lamborghini first became aware of the potential problem last August. It had received two warranty claims in Europe about the Urus’ mismatched hood and fender, so it launched an investigation with the supplier. The automaker was unable to find any additional cases and worked with the supplier to improve the manufacturing process.

So far, the automaker has not been able to find any additional cases.

Go back to February, when an Urus in Indonesia had its hood completely ripped off at high speed. Lamborghini launched another investigation and found defective riveted latch studs.

An investigation is now underway.

Lamborghini will begin notifying affected customers in late June — early July. Owners will be advised to take their SUVs to a dealer for inspection. To fix the problem, the automaker may repair the hood, install a backing plate or both. The supplier began making more reliable parts for Lamborghini in early February.
