I-Pace was supposed to remain on sale alongside Jaguar’s new electric cars, but the brand wants a fresh start.

I-Pace was supposed to stay on sale alongside Jaguar’s new electric cars.

The Jaguar I-Pace will not be part of the company’s all-electric lineup, even as an intermediate model, and will be taken off sale until production resumes in 2025. — along with the rest of the current model lineup.

The move, officially confirmed to Autocar by JLR CEO Adrian Mardell, contradicts his predecessor Thierry Bolloré’s statement that the I-Pace will get «better and better» and will remain on sale — possibly even in its second generation — alongside Jaguar’s all-new electric cars.

The exact end dates for the I-Pace and other Jaguar models have yet to be determined, however, while the company awaits a more precise timeline for the launch of the new lineup. For now, Jaguar says it will unveil its first next-generation car in late 2024 and launch it in 2025, built on the company’s JEA electric architecture.

Mardell said: «We don’t want a product to be out of the market for too long, especially an electrified [I-Pace]. Right now we’re waiting for confidence in the JEA. People are now telling me it will happen in the first half of 2025. That’s just under two years away. I would be more confident in that answer when it’s nine to 12 months away».

Mardell said the I-Pace is currently sold primarily in the U.K. and continental Europe, which helps the company meet emissions regulations. He added that the vehicle has been a big help in developing the company’s other EVs and that JLR «understands how to develop them» based on the I-Pace program. Speaking about Jaguar’s future lineup, Mardell said that sales of the revived lineup will be 4,000 vehicles per month, up from just over 5,000 sales per month in the first quarter of this fiscal year.

Historically, Jaguar’s sales volumes have been much higher, but a recent chip shortage has seen JLR prioritize production of more profitable models, including the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Land Rover Defender. Over the same time period, just over 5,600 Range Rovers and just under 4,700 Range Rover Sports were sold each month, meaning that if current sales volumes continue, the new Jaguars will collectively fall below that duo.

The new Jaguars will be below that duo.

Although all of JLR’s largest models are built on the modular MLA architecture that will spawn the first electric vehicle with the launch of the Range Rover EV in 2024, Mardell said Jaguar needs its own —JEA — architecture to provide «opulent» proportions. Above all, that means a longer wheelbase. «The wheelbase of these cars and this architecture will be longer. Then you can get the beautiful flows that you want from the car».

As for more specifics on their concept, less than two years after the planned launch, Mardell has only said that «the design language of these cars is just gorgeous».
