Hyundai has unveiled the Insteroid concept, a video game-style electric car

After a brief teaser, Hyundai officially unveiled the Insteroid, a concept electric vehicle inspired by the world of video games. It’s a development of the RN24 concept, built for drifting, that goes beyond traditional EV design and is visually striking in its boldness.

Design: wild shapes and rally spirit

The main feature of the Insteroid is the aggressive wide body. The protruding square wings make it look like a hero from a comic book or arcade race. The rear fenders stand out, making the wheels appear to extend beyond the body.

  • Deep front bumper with integrated splitter.
  • Toothed slits above the front wheels in the style of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS
  • Huge antifender on the tailgate.

The whole look of the car is reminiscent of the Rally B monsters of the 1980s – the MG Metro 6R4 or the Suzuki Escudo that conquered Pikes Peak.

  • Safety cage and bucket-shaped seats
  • Total absence of carpeting – maximum lightness and track style.
  • Gamer elementsSpace Invaders graphics in the decor.

What’s under the hood?

Hyundai didn’t disclose exact specs, but the Insteroid is clearly more powerful than the standard 97-horsepower Inster EV. A possible candidate is the 650-horsepower twin-engine setup from the Ioniq 5 N used previously in the RN24 concept.

The Future of the Concept

According to Eduardo Ramirez, chief designer at Hyundai Design Europe, the Insteroid is «an exercise in boundless creativity» designed to convey «the emotion and energy» of the brand.

Serial production is unlikely, but some design elements could appear in sporty versions of the Hyundai Inster. The example of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E, which launched in limited production, may prompt Hyundai to reconsider plans for the Insteroid.

If this electric car were to go into production, it would definitely become a automotive icon of cybersports.
