Ministry of Industry and Trade amends rules for importing cars from China to combat gray market

The Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation has amended the rules for importing cars from China, aimed at settling the «gray» market. According to information published in «Rossiyskaya Gazeta», from October 1, importing cars from China to Russia will be prohibited if these cars are officially sold on the Russian market.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, the import of cars from China to Russia will be prohibited if these cars are officially sold on the Russian market.

Experts suggest that the decision will mainly affect expensive cars such as the Hongqi E-HS9 and Voyah Free, which were unofficially sourced from China and sold for several million rubles cheaper than their official counterparts. The reason is that «serovos» were not required to obtain an OVTS (vehicle type approval), instead they could save money and obtain a ZOETS (single vehicle safety opinion).
The decision was made by the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation.
The ban on imports from China will not affect cars whose manufacturers have officially left the Russian market.
