AUDI E5 Sportback: leaked specifications

AUDI is preparing to launch its first electric car under a revamped brand – without the usual four rings and with a focus solely on the Chinese market. The new AUDI E5 Sportback will be the debut model under the «in China for China» initiative, reflecting a shift to a more localized approach in the world’s largest electric car market.

According to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the AUDI E5 Sportback measures 4,881 × 1,960 × 1,479 mm with a wheelbase of 2,950 mm. The model will be available in four versions with different electric motor outputs: 220kW, 300kW, 386kW and 579kW – the latter even exceeds the Audi e-tron GT S for the European market.

Most of the key components, including the electric motors, are supplied by SAIC subsidiaries. For example, the three older versions will be powered by motors from Huayu Automotive Electric Systems, while the 220kW base variant will be powered by a unit from United Automotive Electronic Systems, a joint venture with Bosch.

AUDI E5 Sportback uses a lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt oxide (NMC) traction battery manufactured by SAIC Power Battery, a joint venture between SAIC and CATL. The car’s electrical architecture is 800-volt, which allows the car to charge 370 kilometers in just 10 minutes. The total range on the CLTC cycle is up to 770 kilometers.

The model will be produced at SAIC Volkswagen Automotive’s plant in Antin, Shanghai, which also serves as SAIC-VW’s headquarters. According to images in the documentation, the E5 Sportback will get lidar above the windshield to support advanced driver assistance systems. Nineteen- and 20-inch wheels will also be available.
