Google is testing a product to play through YouTube

Google is testing a product that will allow gaming through YouTube. The Wall Street Journal reported this, citing an internal letter sent to the company’s employees. The new product, called «Playables» gives users the ability to play on mobile devices or desktops through the streaming video platform.

Playables will reportedly allow players to play instantly through the YouTube app on mobile devices, similar to Stadia. This is Google’s latest video game experience, after Google Stadia, a cloud-based platform that allowed players to stream their library to Chrome, as well as to Chromecast and other similar devices.

It’s currently unclear whether Playables will use the same technology as Stadia, and it’s also unclear whether Playables’ scope will extend beyond basic gaming. The brand had previously tried to reuse Stadia’s technology, offering it to third parties such as fitness giant Peloton to offer gamified versions of their workouts via the cloud, but that attempt has also been discontinued.

In announcing plans to close Stadia in September 2022, platform CEO Phil Harrison acknowledged that the service didn’t get the user response that Google had hoped for after launching in November 2019.
